Most electrical accidents at home are preventable. These five steps make a big difference.
1. Use breakers and an RCD
Breakers cut the power when a circuit is overloaded. An RCD (earth leakage switch) cuts the power in a split second if current leaks through a person. Have a qualified electrician fit both in your consumer unit.
2. Don't overload extension boards
Plugging an iron, kettle and heater into one extension can overheat it. Spread heavy appliances across different sockets.
3. Protect against surges
When power returns after a cut, the surge can damage TVs, fridges and computers. A surge protector or voltage stabiliser helps.
4. Replace damaged cables
Cracked insulation, burnt plugs or warm sockets are warning signs. Switch off and replace them.
5. Buy genuine parts
Fake sockets, breakers and cables fail when you need them most. Buy from a trusted supplier.
