LED or fluorescent: which saves more?

LED lights use much less electricity and last far longer. Here is what that means for your light bill.

Lighting

An LED bulb gives the same light as an old bulb while using a fraction of the power. A 9W LED replaces a 60W bulb, and an 18W LED tube replaces a 36W fluorescent tube with its choke.

What you save

Lights that are on for many hours a day, like security lights, shop lights and kitchen lights, save the most. Changing these first gives the quickest return on the cost of the new bulbs.

How long they last

Good LEDs last many years of normal use, so you change them far less often than fluorescent tubes. They also start at full brightness with no flicker.

Choosing the colour

Warm white (yellowish) feels cosy in bedrooms and living rooms. Cool white or daylight is better for kitchens, offices, shops and outdoor security. Check the cap type too: E27 screw or B22 pin.
